We're committed to keeping Android an open platform for you to learn, experiment, and build for fun. If you are a developer who doesn't distribute apps widely, we recognize that your needs may be different from commercial developers and have provided an account type for you.
Key dates for limited distribution accounts
August 2026: Limited distribution accounts available for everyone. Sign up and register your package names if you're a student or hobbyist who wants to distribute apps to a small number of users. Registering package names and authorizing devices can take some time, so make sure to give yourself plenty of time ahead of the September 30 deadline.
September 30, 2026: Android developer verification protections take effect. Any package names not registered by this date will no longer be installable on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand.
What can a limited distribution account do?
- Register apps
- Share apps with up to 20 devices that end-users have explicitly authorized.
How much does it cost?
This account is free.
How does app sharing work?
Sharing apps with a limited number of devices is achieved through a secure handshake process involving QR codes or links, user consent on the device, and registration using the Android Developer Console.

| Hobbyist | Share with family and friends, or for personal use. My apps have no commercial intent. |
| Individual learner | Experiment with Android development, often for a personal portfolio. I build numerous prototype apps on personal devices to share with peers. |
| Classroom learner | Share with classmates and teachers. My apps are for school projects, and I share often for project-based coursework. |
What you'll need to sign up for a limited distribution account
To successfully create a limited distribution account, you'll need to provide the following:
- A Google Account: A Google Account is needed to create any type of account in Android Developer Console, including a limited distribution account
- 2-Step verification: You must have 2-Step verification turned on for the Google Account you use to sign in

There are no additional verification requirements for limited distribution accounts. For example, you don't need to provide a government ID.
